Saturation Art & Music Festival, Thursday, May 10 – Sunday, May 20, 2007
Riverside, California — April 25, 2007— The Saturation Art & Music Festival is happy to announce eleven consecutive days of live music, art shows, performance, dancing, poetry, burlesque, DJs, film, zines, art vendors, DIY workshops, bike crews, connection, community, and collaboration in several different unconventional venues in Downtown Riverside, CA.
The festival is a milestone in Riverside’s cultural rebirth, and it is a signature event within the new Inland Empire, a place that is at a crossroads between an established heritage and necessary cultural and economic innovation. Now in its sixth year, Saturation remains a unique undertaking that embodies the vitality of Riverside’s grassroots artists. This is a community that has always been here, defending Riverside’s roots while simultaneously heralding and creating the cultural advancements that will be Riverside’s revival. Saturation’s art, performances and events are as diverse as this community itself, representing a wide range of sound, media, art, and experience within an incredibly raw and thriving local culture.
The 55 Bands performing this year represent a wide array of the best, and often most underrepresented sounds in the Inland Empire: often intense and complex, minimalist, defiant, and sometimes messy, sweet, eccentric. Similarly, much of the visual art might be viewed as a departure from the more muted tones of institutional heritage. The work is a broad contemporary spectrum of illustration, design, photography, textiles and multi-media installation from more than 20 working artists. Beyond the live performance and stationary art, the festival will be marked with surprises, guerilla performances, impromptu events, and even a scavenger hunt that will run the length of the festival. “Even 11 days isn't even close to showcasing all of the talent that's in this town,” says Alaska, the festival’s organizer. “As a representation of the art that's being made in Riverside, Saturation barely makes a dent.”
Each day’s event will be anomalous, often bridging several different genres of music and juxtaposing visual elements with performance, aimed at encouraging collaboration between artists of different mediums. Saturation will also host a variety of hands-on workshops taught by artists, ranging from self-publishing zines to screenprinting. Connections such as these are crucial to the festival, but they also serve as a condensed model of what this community is working toward every day. The success of the Saturation Festival and its ability to grow so rapidly is a product of these elements: a community's want for something better, more inclusive, and more interesting, and the bands' and artists' consistent connections, collaboration, motivation, imagination, and support of one another.
“Most of the events are free and all ages so that as many people as possible can see the possibilities in their own backyard—community, collaboration, and the DIY spirit that nurtures good ideas and great art,” says Alaska. “We are helping to foster an inclusive cultural community in Riverside that works toward something bigger, greater, more progressive, more inclusive, and more fun.”
The Saturation Art & Music Festival occurs Thursday, May 10 through Sunday, May 20 in downtown Riverside, CA. For additional information and a complete schedule of events, visit www.myspace.com/saturationfest , or contact Alaska: wordalaska@yahoo.com.
The 2007 Saturation Art & Music Festival is proudly partnered with KUCR, Tiny Shrine Records, Back to the Grind, and Division 9 Gallery, and thanks the IE Weekly, the Riverside Art Museum, The Life Arts Center and Michael Elderman Photography for their generous support.

(Nov-22-2006)D-SQUAD GIG "POSTPONED" AFTER PRESS RELEASE LEAKED TO VENUE!
|
By: micah |
D-SQUAD GIG AT CAFE KASHMIR POSTPONED TO LATER DATE
Apparently the spirit of Pat Bacich will not be revived this holiday season. The Wednesday night show at Cafe Kashmir in South Gate was abruptly "postponed" for no reason but with assurances that a make up date will be scheduled soon. In an email the Kashmir promoters apologized for the inconvenience and added in a postscript that "postponing this show had nothing to do with DS latest press release."
Hah?
Here's what we know. Earlier in the day Desperation Squad, in an effort to address recent criticism that they are disingenuous with venue owners and promoters over the slovenly nature of their show inititated "full disclosure" with Cafe Kashmir by sending them a copy of the ManiaTV.com press release issued earlier this month, a media hype sheet that proclaimed, among other things, that the Squad was "the most annoying band in the world" and that they "get kicked off of every show they are on." Just a couple of hours later came an email announcing the postponement - with the insistence that the press release had nothing to do with it!
Do we think thou art protest too much?
Who knows! Who cares! Just another wacky real life tale of the Desperation Squad, a band that goes on the road and gets everyone pissed off at them for not saying they're going to trash the place, and then when they do try to be aboveboard have a gig mysteriously evaporate in front of their own eyes.
Pretty wack, huh?
Well, for now, the Squad will take them on their word and figure the gig got canned because it's the night before Thanksgiving and nobody can go or wants to work or whatever, and not dwell on the thornier issue of whether or not the band is heading to some kind of industry wide black list. Can you imagine that? The D-Squad - blacklisted!
We're developing quite a reputation for a bunch of geezers, aren't we? (insert Kramer joke here)
Well, anyway, the point is if you had actually made your pre-Thanksgiving and Black Friday plans around the Squad, HA HA HA, oh lordy let me catch my breath a minute, that's okay, whoo boy, you'll have to find something else to do. Bake a pie, hoist a brew, watch Queer Edge on ManiaTV.com, whatever.
We'll, of course, keep you posted on the rescheduled date!

Ready To Cross The Pond
|
“A superior sense of melody and a confident use of the indie genre’s noise, silence and weirdness”
The critics at Gaffa, Denmark’s biggest music magazine are pleased with Racetrack Babies newest release “Summer Salt Santiago”, the band’s third since forming in 1998 in Denmark. Racetrack Babies hope that their critical acclaim will carry over to The States, when they release their first US album at the beginning of November 2006.
So what makes Racetrack Babies different? The recipe is simple: Add a dose of indie pioneers (such as Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, Madrugada and Sonic Youth); mix with a generous amount of John Agnello (producer and mixer for many artists, including Patti Smith, Steve Wynn, Dinosaur Jr.). And last but not least, sprinkle with songwriter and lead singer Hans Christian Wayne’s Scandinavian creativity, and voila, you’ve got “Summer Salt Santiago”.
The creation of the album came about in an untraditional way. All in all, the band brought 30 songs to the studio, all in sketch form, taped on an old Dictaphone. Minutes before the recording sessions started, the band listened to the songs, and immediately picked the songs that they wanted to include on the album. Not long after, all tracks were laid down – no hesitation, only pure impulsive magic. The result is raw, noisy and beautiful.
Besides Hans Christian Wayne on vibrant vocals, Racetrack Babies consist of Minh Le on beating bass, Morten Soefting on daring drums, and Soeren Hansen on groundbreaking guitar. Through passion and pain, they will attempt to win over America’s indie-loving heart!
California Tour Dates:
